Decentralized finance project Sky, formerly recognized as MakerDAO, is carefully evaluating potential brand strategy adjustments in response to significant community feedback following its recent rebranding initiative.
On October 21, Sky's co-founder and lead developer Rune Christensen unveiled a comprehensive proposal that thoroughly examined the protocol's notable achievements and the challenges encountered during the transition from MakerDAO to Sky.
Christensen highlighted that the protocol's newly launched stablecoin, USDS, has already achieved an impressive supply exceeding $1 billion just two weeks after its market debut. This remarkable growth trajectory, predominantly fueled by an influx of new users, has resulted in a combined capital inflow of $700 million into both USDS and DAI since USDS went live.
Beyond USDS's market performance, Christensen emphasized the token's successful integration with prominent decentralized finance platforms including Aave, Ethena, and Morpho. Additionally, the Sky.money platform attracted over 400,000 unique visitors during its inaugural month of operation, demonstrating strong initial market interest.
Despite these encouraging metrics, the platform has encountered substantial community resistance and negative sentiment since implementing the rebrand, prompting a strategic reassessment.
According to Christensen, the primary community concerns center around confusion regarding the new Sky brand identity and questions about the practical utility of its native token. Many users maintain strong allegiance to the established MakerDAO brand, with some expressing preference to retain MKR tokens rather than transition to SKY.
Christensen acknowledged these concerns and proposed that the community should reconsider the branding strategy while presenting three potential pathways forward.
The first option involves maintaining the current Sky brand, which has achieved some brand recognition since the rebranding effort. The second option would entail reverting to the original MakerDAO brand identity, with MKR continuing as the exclusive governance token.
The third alternative proposes a hybrid solution that preserves the Maker name while refreshing its positioning to align with recent product launches, including the USDS stablecoin and the developing StarDAO ecosystem.
Christensen stressed that any potential rebranding decisions must prioritize user protection and token holder interests, stating:
A community forum has been scheduled for Friday, October 25, to discuss and select one of these proposed options. Following this discussion, a finalized proposal titled the "Atlas Edit" will be published on October 28 for additional community feedback. Upon completion of this review phase, a formal governance vote will commence on November 4 to determine the final branding direction.
