United Nations Establishes Blockchain Coalition to Set Standards for Next-Generation Digital Solutions

The United Nations Internet Governance Forum (UN-IGF) has officially sanctioned the creation of a specialized Dynamic Coalition focused on developing comprehensive blockchain standards across multiple sectors, with particular emphasis on public service applications and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.

Supported and administered by the Government Blockchain Association (GBA), this Dynamic Coalition on Blockchain Assurance and Standardization will be co-chaired by Dino Cataldo Dell'Accio, Chief Information Officer of the UN Joint Staff Pension Fund, and Gerard Dache, Executive Director of the GBA.

The coalition's primary objective involves crafting both general and industry-specific blockchain standards for critical domains including artificial intelligence integration, communication infrastructure, supply chain management, digital identity verification, economic development frameworks, environmental sustainability initiatives, and essential public services such as voting systems, healthcare administration, and educational platforms.

Initial efforts have already commenced with the development and piloting of blockchain standards, including the innovative Blockchain Maturity Model. This model functions as a strategic roadmap for organizations seeking to develop reliable, trustworthy blockchain solutions that meet rigorous industry requirements.

Furthermore, the Blockchain Maturity Model serves as an evaluation framework to assess blockchain systems against established industry best practices, filtering out overhyped prototypes that fail to deliver tangible value or practical solutions.

Current blockchain pilot programs are actively exploring the technology's potential to enhance democratic participation through blockchain voting and improve the operational efficiency of credit unions through transparent, secure transaction processing.

Throughout the coming year, the coalition will systematically address each priority domain, publishing comprehensive findings from various pilot initiatives. These publications aim to accelerate the responsible adoption of blockchain technology while ensuring that implemented systems maintain high quality standards and achieve seamless interoperability across different platforms and organizations.

The coalition will also develop and submit detailed proposals for workshops and panel discussions to be featured during the UN-IGF's annual global meetings, fostering international collaboration on blockchain governance and standardization.
